Antigenic Variations in the Plasmodia of Lower Primates as Detected by Immuno-Fluorescence
Summary
Using the indirect fluorescent antibody technique, the antisera from monkeys infected with Plasmodium inui, P. shortti, P. brasilianum, P. fieldi, P. cynomolgi, P. coatneyi, P. gonderi, P. knowlesi and an undescribed Plasmodium sp. from the Nilgiri area of India were titrated against 10 homologous and heterologous antigens.
All of the species exhibited some level of cross-reaction with the other species examined, but all gave the highest level of heterologous reaction to the P. fieldi antigen, suggesting the presence of a common or “generic” antigen in this species.
