The effect of chloroquine and pyrimethamine on visceral leishmaniasis in the hamster was studied using the screening method of Stauber et al. Neither pyrimethamine at 10 mg/kg/day for 6 days or chloroquine at 100 mg/kg/day for a total of 12 days inhibited the multiplication of Leishmania donovani in the hamster liver. However, reasons are presented for using caution in interpreting the negative results obtained in this study.
