Plasmodium lophurae and Plasmodium berghei were isolated from erythrocytes of ducks and mice, respectively. Total lipids were extracted from these organisms and analyzed for lipid classes present by thin-layer chromatography (TLC) and total fatty acid composition by gasliquid chromatography.
Phospholipids, sterols, free fatty acids, and small amounts of triglycerides and sterol esters were separated and visualized by TLC. The major portion of the total lipid fraction in both P. lophurae and P. berghei appeared to be present as phospholipid.
The total fatty acid fraction of both organisms included fatty acids with carbon chain lengths of C 12:0, C 14:0, C 15:0, C 16:0, C 16:1, C 17:0, C 18:0, C 18:1, C 18:2, C 18:3, and C 20:4. The relative percentage composition of the fatty acids of the two organisms varied considerably. The C 18:1 and C 16:0 were the major component fatty acids of P. lophurae and P. berghei, respectively.
