The first edition of this book published in 1949 had one outstanding fault which is continued in the present edition. The title is overly modest. This is certainly not merely a manual of the microscopical diagnosis of malaria but is also the best work available on the relationship of the clinical disease to the findings under the microscope. Quite naturally therefore it also contains the most concise, authoritative information on the clinical aspects of malaria without regard to that concerning the laboratory diagnosis. Many differences may be seen between the first and the present edition. Dr. A. A. Sandosham has been added to the list of authors and Yap Loy Fong the technician-artist has been promoted to co-author. This edition is dedicated to our late fellow-member Dr. Don Eyles.

Since the original plates were lost there are entirely new illustrations which are more profuse and better than their predecessors, including excellent colored plates of thick blood films.
