This book is concerned primarily with basic concepts of the laboratory diagnosis of hematological diseases. Much new information acquired since the first edition four years ago has been included and accounts for the expansion. Beginning with hematopoiesis and a subsequent very good section on morphology, the book continues with the anemias, the leukocyte and related diseases, hemostasis and coagulation and concludes with an 88 page appendix of laboratory methods. There is very little information concerning the clinical aspects of hematological diseases, i.e., the clinical findings, the natural history or course, the modification of disease by therapy. The sections about morphology, the Rh system and hemostasis and coagulation are particularly good. The appendix of methods is very well done and should prove very helpful to many. The bibliography is extensive on all subjects discussed.

It is not anticipated that “everything” in the field of hematology could reasonably be found in a textbook nor is it expected that everyone will agree with all the author's opinions.
