A survey of intestinal parasites was made in 500 penitentiary inmates in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The prisoners came from practically every state of Brazil, but mainly from Sergipe, Bahia, Minas Gerais, Espirito Santo, Rio de Janeiro and Guanabara. It was found that 80% harbored one or more parasites, namely Ascaris lumbricoides (33.8%), Trichuris trichiura (32.6%), Necator americanus (24.8%) and Strongyloides stercoralis (22.0%).
Treatment with dithiazanine iodide was efficacious against Ascaris and Trichuris in 98% of cases, against Strongyloides in 90%, and Necator in 71%.
