Prophylactic treatment of large populations over long periods of time with iodochlorhydroxyquin is safe and leads to a marked reduction in Entamoeba histolytica and the shigellas within these populations. This drug also seems to be the only therapeutic tool needed in such infections if it is continued over relatively long periods of time. Evidence supports the postulation that E. histolytica and the shigellas can be reduced to an infection rate of less than 1%.
