Summary

Utilising reported cases of encephalitis from 1955 through 1959, the age, sex, area and time incidence of this disease on Taiwan is presented. Cases serologically confirmed with Japanese encephalitis virus antigen in 1958 and 1959 indicate that the encephalitis season is short (3 to 6 weeks). During the 5 years of observation, the season occurred as early as June and as late as September. The first isolation of Japanese encephalitis virus on Taiwan is reported.
