Abstract

The American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene has as its primary responsibility the facilitation of communication on tropical medicine in its broadest aspects to interested readers all over the world. As an official publication of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, the Journal has a particular responsibility to serve the membership of that organization through the promotion of science and education. Recently, this latter function has assumed an added dimension. It has long been recognized that the membership of the Society encompassed a remarkable accumulation of expertise and experience in the fields of tropical medicine and international health. It has also becoming increasingly clear that human health in the areas of our primary concern, the developing tropics of Africa, Asia, and Latin America, is actually deteriorating in spite of remarkable scientific advances in the past four decades.
