Abstract

A serosurvey revealed intense cross-reactivity between and . One of the cross-reacting antigens was identified as lipopolysaccharide which reacted with as well as with serum antibodies. A monoclonal antibody bound to lipopolysaccharide as well as to the surfaces of and . It was thus demonstrated that carries a surface epitope identical to an epitope of lipopolysaccharide. The lipopolysaccharide was preliminarily characterized by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and by a lectin-binding assay. The lipopolysaccharides of and are not identical.
