Abstract

This edition updates the list of compounds commonly being used by public health officials to control disease vectors. It was prepared by the WHO Expert Committee on Vector Biology and Control, and it is presented in four parts plus an annex. Part I defines the specifications for 17 insecticides and a larvicidal oil. Most of the insecticides have supplemental specifications for commercial formulations, i.e., for DDT the specifications are for technical DDT and augmented by specifications for water-dispersible powder, water-dispersible powder for overseas shipment, emulsifiable concentrate, and dustable powder. Listed among the specifications are: material description, chemical and physical requirements, packing and marking of packages, heat stability, water content, suspensibility after heat stability treatment (for water-dispersible diazinon powder), suspensibility, etc. The headings for the section describing larvicidal oils are misleading: The initial section is titled, “Larvicidal Oil without Insecticide,” and the subsequent section is, “Larvicidal Oil with Added Insecticide.”
