Abstract

Following the introduction on its use, this self-instructional text on medical mycology is divided into seven modules for which the same structural outline is used: Prerequisites, Content Outline, Follow-Up Activities, References, and Introduction. Topics pertinent to the module are then presented; after each topic study questions are asked in a quiz-like format. A final examination follows. Next, except for Module 4 (superficial and dermatophytic fungi) a section entitled Supplemental Rationale covers additional aspects of a given module's subject matter. For Modules 3, 5, 6 and 7 this is a consideration of the specific mycoses or actinomycetoses involved. Study questions follow. Answers for study questions and examinations are given in an appendix.

Modules 1 and 2 provide the foundation for the remainder of the text. The former introduces the student to the basic terminology associated with the microscopic and colonial morphology of fungi; the latter covers the more commonly used media, stains, and procedures.
