This book is in two sections. Part I has five chapters dealing with the action of venoms. Part II has two chapters concerned with aspects of snake bites.

The first chapter in the book occupies over 100 pages covering species and distribution of rattlesnakes and also details venom yields and lethal toxicity. The chapter is generously illustrated with numerous drawings, pictures (black and white), and tables and contains a large reference list. The two authors Glenn and Straight have done an outstanding service to all investigators interested in rattlesnakes. This chapter sets the tone for the remaining topics of the book.

Chapter two covers physiological and pharmacological effects of venoms with special reference to the cardiovascular, respiratory, somatic nervous systems, and skeletal muscle. The chapter written by Barbara Hawgood, is forty pages long and contains about 100 references.

The author of chapter three, Charlotte Ownby, introduces the reader to the pathology of envenomation.
