The 32 chapters of this book were prepared by participants in a “Tropical Pediatrics Update Course workshop” held during March and April of 1979 at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine. The primary intent of the course and publication of the lectures was to assist pediatricians working in tropical countries to “keep in touch with international opinion and advances in recent knowledge relevant to their sphere of interest and activity ….” The editor and several of the authors have considerable experience in the field of pediatric problems in developing countries.

Dr. Hendrickse and colleagues have undertaken to fill a void in the information available to physicians practicing pediatrics in developing countries. The major textbooks of tropical medicine have addressed common pediatric problems in a cursory fashion. The major pediatrics textbooks usually have not provided in depth reviews of common problems and practical approaches to problem solving in developing countries.
