Abstract

This book is an admirable accomplishment. It provides an authoritative, yet affordable and readable textbook for students of medical virology in the tropics.

The first of the book's two sections is devoted to general virology and its eight chapters succeed remarkably in presenting the essentials of medical virology while, at the same time, drawing the reader into the subject. The clear and concise writing style will be noted and appreciated by all readers, especially those for whom English is not their first language. Each chapter ends with suggested further readings, conveniently divided, when appropriate, into sub-headings. The suggested readings are well selected from international literature and, in general, represent publications which may be found in many institutions in the developing countries.

The second section of the book, selective virology, focuses on the major families of viruses, emphasizing those of relative importance in warm climate regions.
