Abstract

The monograph's first edition, prepared by Sir Gordon Covell, G. R. Coatney, J. W. Field, and Jaswant Singh and published by the World Health Organizationin 1955, has provided a highly useful reference for thoseconcerned with the chemoprophylaxis and chemotherapy of malaria. However, this field has participated fully in the explosion of scientific and biomedical information of recent years. New questions and problems have emerged rapidly. The authors of the monograph's second edition have done a yeoman's task selecting and distilling from that mountain of information and questions to prepare a concise, clear, updated summary for current and subsequent reference.

The second edition retains the general format of the first. It begins with an excellent résuma#x00E9; of apposite historical information, and then deals with the basic biology of malaria important in understanding the diverse uses and effects of different antimalarial agents, the pharmacology of available drugs, new agents being developed, drug
