Abstract

This brief text contains three sections titled: Host-Parasite List, Hosts and Their Parasites, and Diagnostic Techniques. The Host-Parasite List is an alphabetical listing of the major domestic animals found in the United States and their common protozoan, helminth, and arthropod parasites. The domestic animals covered are cat, cattle, chicken (and turkey), dog, horse, sheep, and swine. The parasites are listed under the organ systems which they parasitize. Some parasites listed are not mentioned further in the text. Detailed information on specific parasites is included in the section, Hosts and Their Parasites, which contains short introductions to the parasites of each host species covered, followed by less than 500 words of “biological and diagnostic” information, photographs and/or drawings of diagnostic features, and life cycle drawings of the parasites that the authors consider most important. The purposed use of this book is as a diagnostic aid, and thus it lacks the detailed information on treatment, control, epidemiology, pathology, pathogenesis, clinical signs of infection, and parasite biology found in other volumes.
