Isolated by W. Burgdorfer et al. at Rocky Mountain Laboratory, Hamilton, Montana from blood of emaciated sluggish adult (snowshoe hare), trapped alive in August 1959 at Bitterroot Valley, Montana, USA, Lat. 46°N,Long. 114°W. Canyon in Bitterroot National Forest. Stored immediately at -70°C until inoculated.

Blood diluted in 50% rabbit serum saline. Inoculated 0.02 ml ip into 3-day-old mice.

Reisolation not tried but original source showed both neutralizing and CF antibody to virus isolate.
