Abstract

This book is in three parts. The first describes the parasites, diseases and vectors of the filarial parasites of man: , the Timor filaria, and . It is an account of the history, morphology, biology, and taxonomy of these filarial parasites and includes brief paragraphs on the taxonomy of their vectors. The drugs used in treating filariasis and their efficacy and side effects are also described. The second part is the longest, accounting for one half the text of the book, and describes the geographical distribution of these filariae country by country and area by area. Negative surveys are also included. The third part describes methods and techniques used in studying filariasis. These are described under a number of headings including the dynamics of transmission, the collection and evaluation of vectors, antifilarial drugs, statistical methods, detecting and studying microfilariae and their periodicity, experimental models, and the filariacidal mechanism of diethylcarbamazine.
