Perhaps the only valid criticism which could be leveled against this volume is that the title is ambiguous. This is not a general review of the biochemistry of animal, plant, and microbial toxins. It is, instead, a collection of papers presented at The Fourth International Symposium on Animal, Plant and Microbial Toxins, organized by the International Society on Toxinology and held in Tokyo in September, 1974. While titles of the papers indicate the research interests of the authors, this is in no sense a balanced review of the subject. For example, in the section on biochemistry of animal toxins 20 of 29 papers deal with snake venoms, 2 with scorpion venoms, 3 with fish toxins and one each with amphibian, mollusk, and bee toxins. One paper dealt with both snake and scorpion venoms.
