The results of an eastern equine encephalomyelitis (EEE) surveillance program in central New York State during 1972 through 1974 are presented. This period included the state's second epizootic, which occurred in 1974. The deaths of 17 horses in a three-county area were investigated; EEE virus was isolated from the brains of 5, and diagnostic titers of EEE antibody were found in the sera of 7 others. Virus was also isolated in 1974 from the pooled brain and liver of a fox sparrow and from eight pools of mosquitoes: (5), (2) and complex (1). EEE antibody levels in local bird sera rose from 6.5% in the period May through August to 35.7% in September 1974.
