Abstract

The film strip presentation of Hematology, prepared by Hyun, Blank, and Custer, depicts the morphology of the peripheral blood and bone marrow both in normal and abnormal conditions. In filmstrip 1, morphologic changes in normoblastic and megaloblastic hyperplasia are presented. Subjects encompassed by the second filmstrip include leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma, and macroglobulinemia. Disorders of platelets, metastatic tumors and a variety of other conditions are depicted in filmstrip 3.

On the whole, the authors have presented a fairly comprehensive survey of morphologic changes of blood cells. Some 300 views on good quality color film are available. The views are well labelled and in an accompanying booklet there is adequate discussion of case material relevant to the illustrative material.

There are a few mistakes in the booklet, e.g., von Willebrand's disease is classified as a thrombocytopenia, but these are usually minor. The booklet is, however, constructed poorly, and is not likely to survive normal usage. Nevertheless, the filmstrips should be of considerable value as a teaching aid in hematology, especially for medical students, technologists, house officers, clinicians, and clinical hematologists.
