A method that utilized an agarose column was developed to isolate and concentrate gametocytes from the blood of patients infected with . Scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy revealed that microgametocytes contained a larger and more varied array of cellular organelles than microgametocytes but that both types contained nuclei, free ribosomes, ribosomes attached to membrane-limited cisternae, pigment granules, and mitochondria.
