Increasing and more adventuresome travel by North Americans has created a need for a book with this title; unfortunately Dr. Cahill seems unable to decide whether he is writing for the physician or the traveler, and will probably satisfy neither. The chapter on Advice While Traveling, for example, is directed towards the traveler's own efforts in his behalf and is excellent; distribution of these 16 pages in a manual to patients planning trips to developing countries would be useful. In contrast, the chapter on immunizations includes details which seem inappropriate in a text for travelers—I have visions of hoards of prospective tourists advising their local health authority on the techniques of smallpox immunization and the safety of simultaneous use of live vaccines.
