Abstract

Abstract

The indirect hemagglutination test was performed on serum samples from patients with amebic liver abscess, amebic hepatitis, intestinal amebiasis, miscellaneous nonamebic disorders, and from apparently healthy persons, with the nonaxenic All India Institute of Medical Sciences antigen (A.I.I.M.S.) and with an axenic antigen (strain HK 9). The A.I.I.M.S. antigen gave positive results of 86, 88, 57, 35, and 0%, and the axenic antigen, 93, 100, 71, 25, and 0%. Although higher titers were obtained with the axenic antigen, the two antigens showed excellent correlation. As A.I.I.M.S. antigen is easier to prepare, we recommend its use especially in India where axenic antigen is not yet available.
