This publication covers a multitude of specialties on the use of primates in research. Specialized areas include: Taxonomy and Comparative Biology, Cardiovascular Studies, Genetics, Pediatrics, Gynecology and Obstetrics, Supply, Care and Maintenance, Surgery, Infectious Diseases, and Toxicology.

About eight to 12 papers are included in each specialty section presented by persons working in the particular field and recognized to be knowledgeable in their area.

The purpose of the conference and resulting publication is stated to be the demonstration of the value of primates for research and the dissemination of recent knowledge on the handling, care, and management of these animals. Other objectives include better communication on the use of primates among investigators, exchange of problems, and the publication of the proceedings as a reference resource.

It would not be possible in a single publication of about 700 pages to cover all of the knowledge in the included specialties nor all of the genera and species of primates used in research.
