Isolated by Arbovirus Unit at the South African Institute for Medical Research from pooled liver, kidney, heart, and pancreas tissues of a well, adult Spotted-backed Weaver Bird () caught 5 February 1959 in a mist net at Ndumu, Natal, South Africa, Lat. 27° S, Long. 32° E. Tropical savanna. Tissues stored in solid carbon dioxide freezer until inoculation in mice.

Pooled organs ground in 0.75% bovine plasma-albumin solution. Inoculated 0.02 ml ic in 2-day-old mice on 16 February 1959.

Virus reisolated. Antigenically similar viruses isolated from birds in same area.
