Abstract

Arbovirus Infections Unit, National Communicable Disease Center, Atlanta, Georgia, U.S.A., 3 December 1967.

Group B.

Isolated by John Davie at NCDC, Atlanta, Georgia, from heart and lung pool of well, adult male taken in box trap 10 January 1965 at Cowbone, Hendry County, Florida, Lat. 26° 17′ N, Long. 81° 5′ W. Open sandy grassland with slash pine, palmettos, shrubs and grasses; limestone outcrops. Elevation less than 25 feet. Tissues stored at -50°C until inoculation into mice.

Tissue pool ground in 20% rabbit serum in phosphate-buffered water. Inoculated in 2- to 4-day-old Ha/ICR Swiss mice (dose and route not given) on 8 March 1965.

Virus reisolated. Virus also recovered from serum specimen from same cotton rat. No virus of this type ever in laboratory before.

Size measured as 38 nm by electron microscopy.
