Abstract

Professor Vanbreuseghem has acquiesced to requests by his colleagues and former students to compose a book dedicated solely to the mycotic diseases of man and animals. This book does not contain the detailed discussions found in his contribution to Précis de Mycologie nor is it intended to, as evidenced by the fact that in his introduction the author hastens to add that “… .”

Nevertheless, he has succeeded in compressing a wealth of knowledge, acquired through many years of experience, into a relatively small volume. The book is divided into three main sections. The first of these includes a general discussion of the nature and importance of fungi and the fungi which cause various mycotic diseases. These are presented under 15 subheadings and include brief comments on the etiology, geographic distribution, epidemiology, diagnostic techniques, and treatment of the disease(s) with respect to the individual species involved.
