Summary

was recovered from the throats of 16 of 212 patients with bubonic plague and from 15 of 114 healthy persons in contact with them. Of 11 positive contacts who were followed, three received treatment and had negative cultures 21 days later. The remaining eight untreated persons had negative cultures a second time 21 to 35 days later. All persons appeared healthy at the time of follow-up and reported they had had no illness during the intervening period.
