Abstract

Summary

Seventeen serotypes representing the 13 groups of leptospires were used to detect agglutinins in the sera from 1057 animals of Kenya and Uganda. Serological positives were obtained in 85 of 250 bovines, 13 of 139 goats, 2 of 34 sheep, 2 of 3 donkeys, 12 of 551 rodents and 5 of 64 hippopotamus. Negative results were found with 5 dogs and 11 baboons. There was a scatter of positive reactions for different serotypes with sera from the reactors. Reactions with the group predominated in those specimens obtained from cattle of Uganda and the Kombeni area near Mombasa. High titers with serotype also occurred with the Kombeni bovines. Agglutinins for the group were detected in the rodent from Kombeni.

The existence of a focus of leptospires in Kenya rodents was confirmed by the recovery of isolates belonging to the and groups from captured near Mombasa.
