Abstract

Since their first edition, the “Rivers” and “Dubos” pair have together constituted the best available textbook of microbiology. Succeeding editions have been characterized by revision and progressive expansion and inclusion of new contributions. This fourth edition of the “Rivers” book, now ably edited by Horsfall and Tamm, represents the most extensive revision to date and, correspondingly, the most marked overall improvement.

For those familiar with the 3rd edition, a few “statistical” comparisons may be of interest. Contributors have increased in number by 13, to a total of 57, and include 31 new names. As a result, contributors in most instances represent persons currently active in their assigned subjects. The number of chapters has been increased from 46 to 54 plus a valuable appendix, most of the increase being in chapters dealing with “basic” aspects of virology.
