Abstract

Summary

In this epidemiologic study performed in relatively isolated communities in southern Lebanon, clinically active trachoma was found to be essentially a pre-school age phenomenon. Conjunctival scrapings from a selected number of active, untreated patients were stained with Giemsa and only 4.8 percent were positive for inclusion bodies.

Statistical analysis of prevalence of clinical trachoma in children supports the view that the active stages may be simulated by other follicular conjunctivities and that untreated trachoma in this community may heal without scars. Familial aggregation of cases was also described statistically.
