Rosenau's Preventive Medicine and Hygiene first appeared in 1913. Five successive editions were brought out under the direction of the pioneer with assistance from collaborators. In 1942 this classic was revised by Dr. Kenneth F. Maxcy and the seventh and eighth editions followed in 1951 and in 1956; the title of the latter was changed to Preventive Medicine and Public Health. Each new revision has increased the volume of material so that a complete change in content and format has been brought about by the new Editor Dr. Philip E. Sartwell, Professor of Epidemiology, The Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health, and his 33 contributors (14 of whom are new).

Condensed within 1070 pages, of large dimension, double-column format is an amazingly comprehensive treatment of methodology in Public Health and Preventive Medicine, the Infectious Diseases; Nutrition and Deficiency Diseases; Chronic Illnesses; Maternal and Child Health; Environmental and Occupational Health; Milk and Food Sanitation; Water Supply and Waste Disposal; Public Health Organization and Activities.
