Summary and Conclusions

Amopyroquin (Propoquin®), a relatively new antimalarial agent with the chemical formula 4 - (7 - chloro - 4 - quinolylamino) - a - 1 - pyrolidyl-o-cresol dihydrochloride, was given by intramuscular injection to 525 Panamanians with acute malaria. Patients generally responded very well to this therapy, and there was no evidence of toxicity. A comparison has been made with a series of malaria patients treated with parenteral chloroquine or parenteral hydroxy-chloroquine.

Intramuscular amopyroquin is recommended for treatment of malaria in those patients who require a parenteral medication. In the majority of adult patients, a single injection of 90 to 150 mg base achieved the desired results, with proportionately smaller quantities sufficing for younger children. Multiple injections may be given at the discretion of the physician.
