Abstract

Owing to the variation among strains of and the association of infection by this parasite with bacterial infection of the intestinal mucosa, no single and absolutely safe curative amebicidal drug has been found up to the present. A new compound 11925C has been synthesized which was found in vitro to be similar in its action on to emetine and only inferior to fumagillin (Kradolfer and Neipp, 1958). The drug is a phenanthroline derivative with the composition 5,6-quinone, 4,7-phenanthroline and with the structural formula.

It is slightly soluble in water, and is excreted in bile and urine. The LD dose in rats is 16 times the effective dose (Kradolfer and Neipp, 1958). The manufacturers claim a 100 per cent clearance of amebas on the fifth day in infected rats on a daily dose of 50 mg/kg of body weight (Kradolfer and Neipp, 1958).
