During the period July 1st to December 31st, 1933 and the entire year 1934 a study covering the treatment of with atabrine among Civilian Conservation Corps enrollees was made. This work was started in the Fourth Corps Area and carried out more to prevent the recrudescence of malarial infection among enrollees who returned to their homes after six months service in an endemic area than as a scientific study of malarial treatment. A report covering this period was published in the Military Surgeon.

The results shown by this preliminary study were so satisfactory that it was decided to continue the investigation during the year 1935. This second study was made under strict scientific check and the results were most enlightening and a report covering the conclusions arrived at was published in The American Journal of Tropical Medicine, September 1936.
