Abstract

The fact that a book reaches its seventh edition is proof of its usefulness and in this new edition of an already most valuable work it has been notably increased in value and brought thoroughly up-to-date. As the authors state: “The first edition of this book was presented as primarily a treatise on the fundamental laws and technic of bacteriology, as illustrated by their application to the study of pathogenic bacteria. The sixth edition announced the purpose of developing the book into a manual of infectious diseases. In the composition of this, the seventh edition, our joint endeavor has been to hold these two purposes in just balance, recording the advances of the fundamental science of bacteriology and selecting for special discussion the relation of old and new bacteriological knowledge to the diagnosis, specific therapy, epidemiology and prevention of infectious disease.”
