Abstract

Summary

  • 1.  The results of the treatment with atabrine of fourteen cases of malaria occurring in the Philippine Islands are presented.
  • 2.  Atabrine treatment gave excellent results in 11 cases of benign tertian and 3 cases of malignant tertian infections.
  • 3.  One case of blackwater fever occurred in a case of malignant tertian infection in which atabrine was used successfully.
  • 4.  A five-day course of treatment gave as good results as a seven-day course (0.1 gram, t.i.d.).
  • 5.  In the later cases, patients were released from hospital on the seventh day after instituting atabrine treatment.
  • 6.  No toxic effects or contraindications to the use of atabrine were noted.
  • 7.  No known relapses have occurred in one case after four months and in the remaining cases after seven to ten months.
