Abstract

Summary

Of 225 United States Engineer Troops engaged for four and one half months in mapping unsanitated sections of the Isthmus of Panama 106 (47 per cent) contracted malarial infections while taking 15 grains of prophylactic quinine daily.

On the other hand while taking this amount of quinine and performing arduous field duty only 14 men (6 per cent) developed clinical symptoms of infection and it was not until completion of the mission and discontinuance of quinine that most of the cases occurred.
