There are 576 pages in the fifth edition of this well known book. This includes the index. In addition there are seven full-pages colored plates which are excellent. The 549 pages of text exclusive of one page of appendix which has to do with () the Antiformin Method for Tubercle and () Arrow Poisons, is divided into twenty-nine chapters. There are 184 illustrations in addition to the colored plates. These are on the whole well chosen and admirably complement the text. This fifth edition is increased by 16 pages over the fourth edition which came out in 1918 and by 192 pages over the first edition which came out in 1903.

In the preface to the first edition of “Laboratory Studies” the statement is made that the book is intended for the isolated practitioner in the tropics. Presumably the fifth edition is addressed to the same class of men rather than to the physician with a well equipped laboratory at hand.
