Dear Sir:
The article by Pennetier and others1 leaves the impression that synergism of N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide (DEET) effects by a carbamate is a novel and new observation. In 1996, I published a paper that described testing of carbamate and organophosphate compounds as DEET toxicity synergists.2 DEET was tested as a synergist for some of the cholinesterase inhibitors. Although I did not use the specific compound (propoxur) described in the report by Pennetier and others, the class (carbamates) was well represented, and synergism between carbamates and DEET was described. I believe my paper should have been cited in their article.
