FROM THE EDITORS

JAMES W. KAZURA, Editor-in-Chief AND CATHI B. SIEGEL, Managing Editor
The American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene has undergone several changes behind the scenes over the past few months, many of which will soon become apparent to our readers. By the time you read this, the journal office will be accepting manuscript submissions online. Our new web-based system will benefit our authors by shortening the time a manuscript spends in review and allowing authors to check the status of their manuscript from anywhere in the world. It will also reduce the time the editorial office staff spends processing each manuscript and it will provide our editors with a more efficient reviewer selection process. To review the updated instructions to authors or to submit a manuscript, go to http://ajtmh.manuscriptcentral.com.

In addition, the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene recently signed a contract with HighWire Press to produce an online version of the journal, which is scheduled to be launched in September 2003. Current articles will be full-text searchable, with inbound and outbound links to Medline and other HighWire-hosted journals. Issues from the past five years will be in PDF format, and we are making plans to include even more back content so our readers will be able to access the journal’s archives, which date back to 1921.

HighWire Press, based at Stanford University, provides the technology for most of today’s premier online medical journals. Readers may be suprised to hear that the HighWire portal allows researchers to search all of Medline plus hundreds of full-text HighWire hosted journals. Visit http://highwire.stanford.edu to enhance your current search capabilities.

The journal will also be made available free of charge to researchers in developing countries through our participation in HINARI, the Health InterNetwork Access to Research Initiative. This program, sponsored by the World Health Organization, is in line with the Society’s mission to educate health professionals and the public about tropical diseases, and to disseminate scientific research in this area.

It is our hope that these new technological innovations will enhance the journal’s visibility and encourage the submission of even more quality papers in the field of tropical medicine.

Respectfully,
