Die Experimentelle Bakteriologie und die Infektionskrankheiten

W. KOLLE and H. HETSCH. Seventh Edition. Pp. I–VI. 1–1119. With 154 colored plates and 195 illustrations in text. Urban and Schwartzenburg, Berlin, 1929. 2 volumes

Chas F. Craig

This, the seventh edition of the well known work upon bacteriology by Kolle and Hetsch, far surpasses its predecessors in value, both from the standpoint of the data contained and of the beauty and accuracy of the illustrations. It contains not only most excellent descriptions of the pathogenic bacteria but also fine sections upon the protozoa and the filterable virus diseases, so that the work is much more than a text-book upon bacteriology.

A careful reading of this work demonstrates that it is thoroughly up-to-date, many publications as late as 1928 being quoted, and that, unlike some German scientific works, due credit is given to English, French and American authorities, in the discussion of the various infections and their etiology. The work contains an immense amount of valuable data that does not appear in the usual text-book of bacteriology and for this reason is of special interest to teachers, public-health officers and research workers.
