The first edition, by the present author and Ernest Muir, 1923, was reviewed in the JOURNAL iv, no. 3, May, 1924. The present edition is larger by some forty pages; in addition, better paper, better type, and a slightly wider page have made it possible to print more text per page.
The second edition brings the subject up to date. A comparison of the two editions reveals how considerable has been the progress in our knowledge of kala-azar. The chapter on epidemiology is much enlarged, based on more extensive and more accurate data. Etiology is discussed at great length due to the recent information of the probable rôle of Phlebotomus in the transmission of the disease. The author states in his preface that much of this chapter "will be entirely superfluous directly the transmission problem is solved."
