Rural and Municipal Water Supplies in Haiti1,2,

C. S. Butler, Director of Health
Republic of Haiti

R. M. Choisser, Director of Laboratories
Haitian General Hospital

The time has come when the government must consider ways and means of giving larger and more wholesome water supplies to the growing Haitian population both rural and municipal. It is needless to remind this audience that the commercial and social development of any people is directly and intimately dependent upon the abundance and purity of its water supplies. It is also needless to remind you that every drop of water used in the Republic of Haiti is heavily contaminated except the small quantities which are sterilized by individuals or family groups.

Port-au-Prince as you know receives its water supply from eight different springs situated at various places at the base of Morne Hôpital. The water, at the source in each instance is crystal clear. But this factor alone, in spite of its desirability is not necessarily an index of its potability.
