Complement Fixation in the Diagnosis of Infections with Endamoeba Histolytica¹

In a previous contribution (1) the writer described the occurrence of hemolytic and cytolytic substances in alcoholic extracts of cultures of Endamoeba histolytica, and while engaged upon the study of such extracts it was noted that when they were used as antigens in a complement fixation test with the serum of individuals infected with this parasite, complement fixation resulted, and that negative results were obt'ained with the blood serum of individuals free from infection with the parasite. This fact was reported in the communication referred to above but at that time the number of observations were so few that it was felt that further work should be accomplished before publishing a detailed statement of the work. Since the publication of the paper referred to the writer has continued observations upon this subject and the present contribution describes the results obtained to date.
