The Tropical Splenomegaly of Strong and Shattuck

The sumptuous medical report of the Hamilton Rice Seventh Expedition to the Amazon (1) by Strong and Shattuck has recently made its appearance. To one who has had the privilege of an extended residence in Brazil, the report makes an especial appeal. The chapters on malaria and splenomegaly particularly attract the attention of the writer, as these subjects largely occupied his attention during nearly four years of residence in south central Brazil.

The opinions therein expressed regarding splenomegaly are so divergent from those formed by the writer from a protracted study of malaria made in the latter area, that a critical examination of the statements of Strong and Shattuck appears worth while.
