The Pathology of Blackwater Fever

G. H. Whipple
From the Department of Pathology, School of Medicine and Dentistry, University of Rochester, Rochester, New York

In 1909 appeared a paper "Blackwater fever and pernicious malaria in Panama" published in a new periodical "Malaria." This publication was issued from 1908 to 1910 and consisted of two volumes, after which time it was discontinued. As a result very few libraries possess these two volumes of "Malaria" and the scientific papers therein are not available to students of tropical diseases.

This material was collected and studied in the Ancon Hospital Laboratory which at that time was under the direction of Dr. Samuel T. Darling. At various times Dr. Darling and others have urged the writer to publish some of this data in one of the recognized journals concerned with tropical diseases. One is surprised to find that so few papers give careful descriptions of the histological lesions of blackwater fever. Furthermore this material was obtained very shortly after death and studied under favorable conditions.

Received June 8, 1926.
