An Epidemiological Study
Nelson C. Davis AND
Mark F. Boyd
1. Studies in certain areas within the low, coastal region ofthe State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, have revealed a very smallnumber of infections with Plasmodium malariae. Reasons are givenfor believing that some infections have been missed and otherswrongly diagnosed at the time of the surveys.
2. The dataindicate that the quartan rate probably fluctuatesin the samemanner as that of the other malaria infections. The persistenceof P. malariae blood infections during monthsof low fever incidencehas been verified.
3. The geographical distribution of theP. malariae infectionsreveals the presence of definite fociwhich consistently producenew cases each year. There is noobvious reason why the rateshould continue so low, i.e., whythere is no epidemic increasein quartan comparable to thatof the other malaria fevers.
